During a hike on Lookout Mountain in Phoenix, Arizona, a hiker noticed a pair of amber eyes shining from a small hole on the mountainside.

The eyes belonged to a scared dog camouflaged against the dirt, who seemed to have been trapped there for several days, suffering from dehydration and injuries.

After spotting the dog, the hiker called the Arizona Humane Society, who dispatched emergency animal medical technicians Tracey Miiller and Ruthie Jesus.

They found the dog, later nicknamed Bright Eyes, too weak to walk. The rescuers took turns carrying her down the slippery trail to safety. The technicians noted her grateful demeanor as she relaxed during the descent.

The exact reasons how Bright Eyes ended up on the mountain remain unknown, but her rescue was timely, potentially saving her from further peril.
